Chillystories
The Coin Sword
This story is more recent and only happened a couple years ago:
My parents moved and I inherited a good amount of family heirlooms that they no longer had room to store. One of these was an old Chinese coin sword. For not familiar, these are small (maybe about one foot or more) made entirely of old Chinese coins. Historically (pre-1900’s) Chinese coins were produced with a square hole in the center, saving metal and allowing people to securely string together their money on a single chord (a good idea, if you ask me!). They are intricately creating a “blade,” “grip,” and “guard” using only coins. These swords are meant to be hung inside of the front door to prevent bad spirits from entering. It is said that some of the coins use coins dug and stolen from old graves.
This particular sword was given to my mother by her mother-in-law (my fraternal grandmother). My mother has always been particularly sensitive to energies/spirits and never felt good about this sword. When my grandmother gave it to her, my mother stored it the garage wrapped in plastic all those years until she moved and asked if I wanted it. She didn’t feel good about throwing it out but warned me about it beforehand. Not really thinking much about it, I decided to take it.
So there it was in my apartment amongst all the boxes and items I’d inherited from my parents’ move. After procrastinating for months, one evening I finally set about unpacking piles of boxes. I had totally forgotten about the coin sword and looked at it carefully after unpacking it from the box. It was still wrapped in the stiff, clear plastic my mother had carefully tied it up in years ago. I on the table and continued on emptying out the boxes.
After a few minutes, I heard a crackling sound and realized the plastic covering of the sword was slowly opening. I figured it was the stiffness of the material and quickly removed all the plastic and threw it away.
I continued unpacking items and for about an hour before I realized that I was feeling cold in the room. Keep in mind that this was early fall and that particularly warm. I remember it being about 75-79 degrees in the room which was the normal range of the room according to the digital room temperature screen I keep there. At first I thought I felt cold just because I was hungry but when I checked the digital temperature screen, I saw that it had somehow dropped to 62 degrees. I don’t think I’ve ever seen it that cold in the room. In the winter the heat kicks in (keeping it reliably 70+ degrees) and in the summer I’d never set the air conditioners 73.
Trying to forget about it, I decided to turn on my laptop so I could finish unpacking to some music. I’m really on top of keeping my computer battery topped up (as a matter I’m charging as I’m typing this!) but I realized my battery was completely drained and I was sure I had kept it topped up completely earlier.
That night I ate early and got into bed, still feeling the chill remain in my apartment. Nothing strange happened except that it did stay very cold in my apartment all that time. It took a couple of days but I finally realized that maybe there was some kind of energy or spirit attached to the sword and maybe it was best to get rid of it.
Not wasting a second, I took the sword downstairs to back of the building where the garbage cans are located. I didn’t feel right about throwing it in the trash (and worreied about spirits following me) and instead put the sword on the brick fence before going back up to my apartment.
It’s hard to explain the sensation in my apartment but I noticed it right away. It just felt totally different when I got in and closed the door behind me. It was as if something big was in there and was not totally gone. It didn’t feel like it was a human spirit. More like some kind of energy or entity that didn’t feel good or bad (just massive). I wouldn’t have noticed until it wasn’t there any more. I noticed later that the chill in the air was gone and the room had returned to the 70’s where it stayed.
I’m still not sure what to make of that coin sword but can understand its power if was meant to keep energies from entering. I wonder if anyone from the building found and took that sword?
